In celebration of International Women’s Day this year, we’ve invited a number of academics and legal experts to the Law Society to discuss what impact immigration law reforms are having on women trying to move to Canada.

Traditionally, this event has attracted a passionate crowd — many of whom have dedicated their lives to promoting the rights of women in Canada and beyond.

We co-host this yearly event as an extension of our dedication to supporting equality-seeking groups, including women.

Our efforts in this area are consistent and nuanced. Back in May 2008, Convocation approved recommendations to enhance the retention of women in private practice.

Through that initiative, we cultivated a number of resources designed to help women in the legal world overcome workplace challenges and thrive. We will release publicly the Justicia resources in April 2014.

Later, in May, we will host the Justicia Symposium, featuring workshops on issues that are at the heart of the Law Society’s work on retaining and advancing women in private practice. Topics considered will include: career advancement, leadership, business development and flexible work arrangements.

We’re focused on these areas, looking closely at the challenges lawyers are facing.

I hope you’ll join us on March 6 to learn more from experts dedicated to promoting equality.

The Law Society is proud to co-host this event with the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic, the Women Lawyers Forum Section of the Ontario Bar Association, the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund and the Women’s Law Association of Ontario.

I look forward to seeing you there.
